The DoD scholarships are for the academic session 2024. SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation. The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program offers two scholarships for STEM students – the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship).
Scholarships are awarded for 1 year to a maximum of 5 years of funding, depending on degree requirements. The scholarships are for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. Students pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) subjects can apply for these scholarships. Eligibility Requirements
- Applicant must be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.
- You must be 18 years old or older by August 1, 2024.
- Able to do at least one summer internship (multi-year scholars only).
- Requesting at least one year of degree finance prior to graduation (starting on program start date).
- Must be willing to work for the Department of Defense after a degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
- Applicant must be pursuing a technical bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the 21 STEM fields listed above.
- Active-duty military members must be separated or on terminal leave by August 1, 2024, to be eligible for the Scholarship.
- able to produce a fall 2024 college transcript from a regionally accredited US college or university, OR be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited US college or university.
- Members of the Reserve and National Guard are eligible to apply. Current ROTC participants who have committed to future military service are not eligible to apply.

The SMART Program accepts applications annually from August 1 to December 1. All applicants are required to submit applications online by December 1 at 5:00 p.m. EST. All supporting materials, including reference forms, must be received by December 1 at 5:00 p.m. EST. Traditionally, applicants are notified of their award in the spring.
